2014 World Cup to use Goal Line Technology (GLT)

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has confirmed that goal line technology will be implemented at the 2014 World Cup (Brazil).

Since the Frank Lampard's disallowed goal for England at the 2010 World Cup, Sepp Blatter has repeatedly pushed for goal line technology. Goal line technology was successfully experimented in December 2012 at the Club World Cup.

Sepp Blatter has mentioned that the goal line technology will be used to assist the match officials however the technology will not be implemented for at all the World Cup qualifying matches. He mentioned the goal line technology is vital when a goal is decisive for a match, for instance, at the knockout stage.

Goalref which uses magnetic sensors to determine whether or not the ball has crossed the line and Hawkeye which uses multiple cameras were used in December 2012 at the Club World Cup. FIFA has welcomed tenders to provide the system.

Sepp Blatter has mentioned explicitly technology will not be implemented for offsides or penalty box as many organisations are concerned that once the goal line technology has been brought into soccer game then eventually other modern technologies will be brought in to monitor offsides, penalty, etc. Furthermore, he stated that the aim of the goal line technology is just to assist the match officials.

What do you think about the implementation of the goal line technology? Should FIFA implement this technology at World Cup? Should this goal line technology be used in other competition, for instance, English Premier League and UEFA Champion League? Do you think that the implementation of this goal line technology will lead to other technologies to be used, for example, may be offside technology, etc?

Origin of Hokkien New Year

Hokkien New Year (拜天公)is a festival that is celebrated by the Hokkien on the ninth day of Chinese New Year. This festival is widely known among the Chinese of Malaysia, Singapore, and China. Hokkien in these countries will celebrate the festival from the night of the eighth day of new year until the morning of the ninth day of new year to appreciate and thank the help from Jade Emperor.

The origin of this festival comes from the Ming Dynasty in China when the Hokkien are attacked by pirates during Chinese new year. That time the Hokkien hid into a field of sugarcane at night to escape from the attack. It was the morning of the ninth day of new year when the attack was over. Therefore, the Hokkien believed that they would be able to survive the attack was because of the help of the Jade Emperor. Hence, every year the Hokkien will celebrate from the night of the eighth day until the morning of the ninth day with firecrackers, roasted pig, and sugarcane as appreciation for the help from Jade Emperor.
